Cake Shake (Junior’s New Yorker Cake Shake)

A “cake shake” adds cake to an ice cream (or yogurt) shake. Sonic Drive-In restaurants sold a “50th Birthday Cake Shake” in 2003, to celebrate its founding in 1953. White sheet cake was blended into a shake.

Portillo’s restaurants (Chicago, IL) have served a “chocolate cake shake” since at least 2007. Portillo’s website states, “Have you heard of our famous “cake shake?” Yes, we actually put a slice of chocolate cake into our blended milkshakes, making a truly unique, must-try dessert.”

Junior’s restaurants began in Brooklyn, New York, and specialize in cheesecake. “Junior’s + cake shake = happy tummy!  You will thank me profusely for it later. #NYC #NewYorkCity” was posted on Twitter by ImagesbyTDashfield on July 30, 2014. Junior’s sells “The ‘One-and-Only’ New Yorker Cake Shake,” a shake described by USA Today on December 4, 2017, as “a strawberry milkshake with a vanilla-frosted graham-cracker rim and a full slice of fresh strawberry cheesecake on top.”

5 May 2003, Journal Record (Oklahoma City, OK), “Sonic celebrates 50 years with new birthday cake shake,” pg. 1:
As part of its celebration, Sonic has developed a 50th Birthday Cake Shake - a blend of real white sheet cake, icing, soft serve and colorful sprinkles all in one cup.

“Customers enjoy Sonic’s variety of one-of-a-kind tastes and the 50th Birthday Cake Shake is a delicious addition to our signature menu during the month of May,” said Pattye Moore, president-Sonic Corp.

6 June 2003, Northwest Florida Daily News (Fort Walton Beach, FL), “Sonic serves nostalgia, good fast food” by Colleen Coffield, pg. E15:
When I visited, cake shakes also were being offered for a limited time.

The birthday cake shake is appropriately timed for Sonic’s celebration of its 50th birthday. It includes cake crumbs, whipped topping and colorful sprinkles. Other cake shakes are the pineapple upside down cake and the strawberry shortcake. All are wonderful, and remind me of eating cake with melting ice cream at birthday parties.

6 January 2011, Philadelphia (PA)

, “Tasty trouble: Kan this snack be saved?” by Ronnie Polaneczky, pg. 3:
Remember when restaurateur Stephen Starr created the “Cake Shake”? It was a milkshake, offered at his SquareBurger food stand in Franklin Square, that featured chunks of Butterscotch Krimpet. It was disgustingly delicious—a kitschy twist on an old favorite.

Deconstructing the Cake Shake from SquareBurger
By Carolyn Wyman |  Published 08/19/2015
(...)
Consisting of two Tastykake Krimpet butterscotch cupcakes blended with milk and caramel syrup and topped with whipped cream, the Cake Shake was the big hit of SquareBurger’s menu when the Stephen Starr burger stand opened in the Franklin Square kiddy park in summer 2009.
(...)
“While we were brainstorming ideas, somebody said, ‘There’s a Twinkie shake that’s really popular in New York,’” Cash recalls. Cash’s mind immediately went to Philadelphia’s own sponge cake treat. Given Starr’s interest in local ingredients and SquareBurger’s location in a popular historic park, it was a plus that a Tastykake shake “shouted Philadelphia,” says Cash.

9 October 2017, Newsday (Long Island, NY), “Junior’s offers pumpkin shake: Cheesecake on brand new drink” by Nicole Levy,, pg. ?:
Available at any Junior’s location through November, the Pumpkin Pie Cake Shake starts off with cinnamon and brown sugar-accented vanilla ice cream blended with milk. That mixture is poured into a glass rimmed with vanilla frosting and crushed graham crackers. Capping the glass is a hefty slice of Junior’s new pumpkin pie cheesecake, which comes with a graham cracker crust, a layer of pumpkin pie filling, a tier of traditional cheesecake and pumpkin mousse rosettes speckling the top. The entire shake is then buried in whipped cream.

The Pumpkin Pie Cake Shake costs $15.95, a dollar more than the elaborately bedecked shakes at Black Tap’s comfort food restaurants.
