Canajoharie: Flavor-Town (nickname)

“Flavor Town” (or “Flavortown”) means a restaurant or a dish—and sometimes a food destination city—that is packed with flavor. In many print ads in 1939 and 1940, Beech-Nut Gum advertised that it was manufactured in Canajoharie, New York, and called the city “Flavor-Town.”

American restaurateur and television personality Guy Fieri popularized the “Flavortown” expression on his Food Network television shows, particularly the show Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives that began its series in 2007. “Guy on Diners Drive-Ins & Dives: ‘It’s Christmas in Flavor Town!’” was posted on Twitter by jac on May 23, 2008. “Guy Fieri has a feature in Metro NY today talking about dive restaurants. Flavortown!” was posted on Twitter by BrianneH on October 24, 2008. Fieri’s book Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives, the Funky Finds in Flavortown: America’s Classic Joints and Killer Comfort Food was published in 2013.

Guy’s Fieri’s company Knuckle Sandwich LLC trademarked “Flavor Town” and “Guy’s Flavortown Marketplace.”

The opposite of Flavortown has been suggested as Blandberg, Blandcity, Blandland and Blandtown.

Beech-Nut, the baby food producer, was founded in Canajoharie in 1891 during the period of early industrialization in the river valley. It served as the largest employer in the town for more than a century. In March 2011, the Beech-Nut factory moved out of Canajoharie, relocating to a new factory in the nearby town of Florida, near Amsterdam on the south side of the river, still in Montgomery County.

Wikipedia: Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives
Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives (often nicknamed Triple D and stylized as Diners, Drive-Ins, Dives) is an American food reality television series that premiered on April 23, 2007, on the Food Network. It is hosted by Guy Fieri. The show originally began as a one-off special that aired on November 6, 2006. The show features a “road trip” concept, similar to Road Tasted, Giada’s Weekend Getaways, and $40 a Day. Fieri travels around the United States (although he has also featured some restaurants in European cities, including London, England and Florence, Italy) looking at various diners, drive-in restaurants, and dive bars.

Flavor Town
This is a destination that has amazing food. Since the food is so good, this must be where flavor lives, and you have to get there. Commonly referenced on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives on Food Network.

Beech-Nut, ‘Flavor-Town’ part ways
Production ends at company’s baby food facility in Canajoharie

By ERIC ANDERSON Business editor Published 12:01 am EDT, Saturday, March 26, 2011
CANAJOHARIE—Beech-Nut ended production at its plant in downtown Canajoharie on Friday, as it shifts the remaining baby food operations to its $125 million state-of-the-art facility about 22 miles away at the Town of Florida Business Park.

The white, multi-story building with its landmark sign next to the Thruway helped put the town on the map, with extensive advertising campaigns that touted Canajoharie’s physical beauty and called it “Flavor-Town.”

Who is Arkell? Well, he’s pretty important to Canajoharie’s history. He was the first president of the Beech-Nut Packing Company, founded in the village in the late 1800s. The company’s factory put Canajoharie on the map and helped it thrive.

Today, Bartlett Arkell’s museum is both a showcase for local history—highlighting the role Beech-Nut played in the village, along with Arkell family—and a collection of both traditional and modern art pieces

Welcome to Flavor Town: A Lovely Bunch of Tasty Bits
Erin Lewis, Dustin Lewis, Amanda Lewis
Bookbaby, Jan 6, 2016 - Cooking - 116 pages
We just really like food. Tasty good food with lots of flavors and textures. We love making it; love eating it with family and friends. Love trying new recipes and remaking old ones. Food is all intertwined with memory and life experiences. Have you ever seen Star Trek: Voyager? In one of the episodes, Neelix says food is sometimes like time travel. You inhale an aroma, take a bite of something and suddenly, bam! You’re back at the moment you first tasted it. So what we wanted to do is package this special group of food recipes into a gift for you, and hope that it contains not only old & warm memories, but the possibility of creating new ones. Enjoy.
