“Censorship is the child of fear and the father of ignorance”

“Censorship is the child of fear and the father of ignorance” is a saying that has been printed on many images.

American author Laurie Halse Anderson wrote in Speak (1999):

“Censorship is the child of fear and the father of ignorance. Our children cannot afford to have the truth of the world withheld from them. They need us to be brave enough to give them great books so they can learn how to grow up into the men and women we want them to be.”

Laurie Halse Anderson wrote in SHOUT (2019):

“Censorship is the child of fear
the father of ignorance
and the desperate weapon of fascists
everywhere.”

Banned Books Week & SPEAK

I don’t know a single author who can abide censorship. Anderson herself wrote, “[C]ensoring books that deal with difficult, adolescent issues does not protect anybody. Quite the opposite. It leaves kids in the darkness and makes them vulnerable. Censorship is the child of fear and the father of ignorance. Our children cannot afford to have the truth of the world withheld from them.”

1 October 2015, The Mercury (Hobart Town, Tasmania), “Letters to the Editor,” pg. 16:
The substance of the book in question was Jesus’s teaching about sex and marriage. Will Tasmanians be forbidden next to distribute the Bible, and to read it out loud in our homes and streets, our schools and public church services? Censorship is the child of fear and the father of ignorance. Should we prosecute those who upset us or disagree? Light and truth sparks instead from fearless adult debate.

“Hey folks, BuzzFeed is trying to infiltrate Gab, be careful, don’t interview with them, don’t give them shit. Just received a private message on Reddit from Charlie Warzel with BuzzFeed,” wrote MicroChip, whose bio shows the Laurie Halse Anderson quote “Censorship is the child of fear and the father of ignorance.”
