"I’ll stick with gin. Champagne is just ginger ale that knows somebody,” said the character “Hawkeye” Pierce in an episode ot the TV series M*A*S*H that aired on March 18, 1973. The episode was written by Larry Gelbart and Robert Klane. The line has been included in several books on drinks.

Above, a 1934 plaque from the Big Apple Night Club at West 135th Street and Seventh Avenue in Harlem. Discarded as trash in 2006. Now a Popeyes fast food restaurant on Google Maps.
