“Chips are for sandwiches, not shoulders”

“A chip on one’s shoulder” is an old saying. The chip is not necessarily a potato chip, but there are jokes.

“‘Sandwiches need chips, shoulders do not.’ thank you, Schlotzsky’s” was posted on Twitter by Laura on November 10, 2010. Schlotzsky’s (a chain restaurant specializing in sandwiches) put this “Sandwiches need chips, shoulders do not” message on its bags of potato chips.

The saying has been more popular in a slightly different form. “‘Chips are made for sandwiches, not shoulders’ - BBQ #Schlotzky’s” was posted on Twitter by Mark Martin on June 21, 2011. “Chips are for sandwiches, not for shoulders” was posted on Twitter by Schlotzsky’s on October 29, 2015. “Chips are for sandwiches, not shoulders” was posted on Reddit—Showerthoughts on August 20,2019.

Wikipedia: Chip on one’s shoulder
To have a chip on one’s shoulder refers to the act of holding a grudge or grievance that readily provokes disputation.

It can also mean a person thinking too much of oneself (often without the credentials) or feeling entitled.

Wikipedia: Schlotzsky’s
Schlotzsky’s is a privately held franchise chain of restaurants, specializing in sandwiches. The company is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. Schlotzsky’s has more than 350 franchised and company-owned locations worldwide. Most locations are in the south and southwestern United States, but the company is expanding into areas across the country, particularly the north and southeast.

6 March 2011, Columbia (MO) Daily Tribune, “Rock Bridge fueled by chips and doubters” by Rus Baer, pg. B3:
After the Rock Bridge boys basketball team’s 57-45 win over Branson in a Class 5 quarterfinal yesterday afternoon in Springfield, I stopped by one of my favorite long-lost sandwich shops—Schlotzsky’s—to grab a bite.

On the bag of chips I received with my tasty turkey and bacon club, there was this silly slogan: “Sandwiches need chips, shoulders do not.”
