City of Golden Dreams

New York City has infrequently been called the “City of Golden Dreams.” “That city of golden dreams and gold bricks, New York, N. Y.” was cited in print in 1908. “The City of Golden Dreams” is the title of a chapter in The Story of New York: An Informal History of the City (1964) by Susan Elizabeth Lyman.

“City of Golden Dreams” has also been the infrequent nickname of such cities as Venice (Italy) and San Francisco, California.

Did you ever hear of a matrimonial train? There is one, and it travels between that unromantic place, Newark, N. J., and that city of golden dreams and gold bricks, New York, N. Y.

Would a city by any other name be as sweet?  Many evidently have though so, for New York has been called the Big Apple, Fun City and the Melting Pot. It has been the City of Golden Dreams, the Capital of the World, and the City So Nice, They Named It Twice (though it might have to share that last one with Walla Walla).
