Coachella East (Panorama Music Festival nickname)

The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, in Indio, California, was founded in 1999. In 2015, Coachella’s founders sought to have a similar festival in New York City. The proposed festival was dubbed “Coachella East” on September 30, 2015.

Original plans were to hold the festival in Queens, so it was named Panorama, after the Panorama of New York City at the Queens Museum, originally contructed for the 1964 World’s Fair. The Panorama Music Festival (“Coachella East”) took place July 22-24, 2016 at Randall’s Island Park.

The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival (commonly referred to as Coachella or the Coachella Festival) is an annual music and arts festival held at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, located in the Inland Empire’s Coachella Valley in the Colorado Desert. It was founded by Paul Tollett in 1999 and is organized by Goldenvoice, a subsidiary of AEG Live. The event features many genres of music, including rock, indie, hip hop, and electronic dance music, as well as art installations and sculptures. Across the grounds, several stages continuously host live music.

Governors Ball Seeks City’s Help To Stop Coachella East
BY JEN CARLSON IN ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT ON OCT 16, 2015 3:51 PM
It was recently announced that AEG Live, the company behind Coachella, was eyeing Queens for an East Coast version of their festival, to be called Panorama. That’s fine… but they scheduled it for just two weeks after the independently run Governors Ball, and have reportedly been securing headliners that would potentially have gone on the Ball’s bill.

Panorama aka Coachella East no longer in June (the unannounced NYC fest is looking for a new date)
By BrooklynVegan Staff December 15, 2015 10:12 AM
Panorama, the not-announced, but much talked about new NYC music festival set to take place in Queens this summer, is still planned, but it won’t happen in June anymore. Goldenvoice/AEG is apparently having trouble with permits and are working to lock down a new date. Meanwhile, already-confirmed bands (like LCD Soundsystem?) are either booking new NYC shows in June, or changing around their 2016 schedules while they wait for the new date.

Coachella Creators Bringing Panorama Festival to NYC in July
1/11/2016 by Colin Stutz
Goldenvoice, the event producers behind the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, have formally announced a new festival called Panorama set for this summer at New York City’s Randall’s Island Park on July 22-24.

In an announcement, Panorama is being billed as “Three days of music, art, technology, and local food offerings.” The name is taken from the Panorama of the City of New York, a nearly 10,000–square-foot to-scale model of the city located in Queens Museum.

New York City wraps up its ‘Coachella East’ festival
Xochitl Pena, The Desert Sun 10:33 a.m. PDT July 26, 2016
The new music concert in New York City called Panorama—also known as “Coachella East”—came to a close Sunday after three days of headlining performances by LCD Soundsystem, Kendrick Lamar and Arcade Fire.

The inaugural event was held at Randall’s Island Park in New York City and produced by Goldenvoice, the same producers of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival – hence the nickname.

Panorama had a capacity to hold about 40,000 people each day, which is drastically less than the more than 90,000 a day attendance at Coachella. But, Coachella has been jamming along for than 15 years.
