“Courage doesn’t mean you don’t get afraid. Courage means you don’t let fear stop you” is an inspirational saying that has been printed on many images. The quotation is from American surfer Bethany Hamilton, who survived a 2003 shark attack to her left arm.
 
Hamilton said, as quoted in the “Teen Beat” column in the Hood County News (Granbury, TX) on August 21, 2004:
   
“I want to tell you something about courage. Courage doesn’t mean you don’t get afraid. Courage means you don’t let fear stop you. I am afraid of sharks. I think about them every day. But you gotta have something you love—something that makes you want to go beyond the fear.”

Bethany Meilani Hamilton-Dirks (born February 8, 1990) is an American professional surfer who survived a 2003 shark attack in which her left arm was bitten off and eaten but who ultimately returned to professional surfing. She wrote about her experience in the 2004 autobiography Soul Surfer: A True Story of Faith, Family, and Fighting to Get Back on the Board. In April 2011, the feature film Soul Surfer was released.
