COVID-1984 (COVID-19 + Nineteen Eighty-Four)

The 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic disease was called COVID-19 (after the year 2019). Some people felt that the coronavirus lockdowns and the loss of liberty made it seem more like COVID-1984 (COVID-19 + Nineteen Eighty-Four). Nineteen Eighty-Four is a dystopian novel by English novelist George Orwell that was published in 1949.

“COVID-1984” was posted on Twitter by 無難な駄目人間 on February 17, 2020, and on Twitter by Bernie Sanders’ Hot Couch for All on March 5, 2020. COVID-1984: A Global 9/11 was the title of a YouTube video by Spiro Skouras on March 19, 2020.

Fauxvid-1984 (faux + COVID-19 + Nineteen Eighty-Four) is a similar term.

Wikipedia: Nineteen Eighty-Four
Nineteen Eighty-Four: A Novel, often published as 1984, is a dystopian novel by English novelist George Orwell. It was published on 8 June 1949 by Secker & Warburg as Orwell’s ninth and final book completed in his lifetime. The story was mostly written at Barnhill, a farmhouse on the Scottish island of Jura, at times while Orwell suffered from severe tuberculosis. Thematically, Nineteen Eighty-Four centres on the consequences of government over-reach, totalitarianism, mass surveillance, and repressive regimentation of all persons and behaviours within society.

I fully expect the next Megadeth album to include a song about coronavirus and the government that includes one of Dave’s signature cringey portmanteaus in the form of “COVID-1984”

IMAGINE a Britain where everyone dutifully carries an identity card and the Government tracks the movements of all its terrified citizens.

It is a bleak world of curfews and crackdowns, of mass surveillance and monitoring systems - with facial recognition cameras looming over every street corner.

Dear Editor,
“The people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country.” Hermann Goering

The reality is that most of us are not so independent-minded and courageous; rather, we are easily influenced by groupthink.  Made famous by George Orwell in his novel 1984, groupthink is a psychological phenomenon that occurs within a group of people in which the desire for harmony or conformity in the group results in an irrational and dysfunctional decision-making outcome.
