Crumbs Along the Mohawk (ice cream flavor)

Stewart’s Shops (located primarily around Albany, NY) introduced a “Crumbs Along the Mohawk” flavor in 2000. The name “Crumbs Along the Mohawk” is a nod to the Mohawk River and the 1936 novel and 1939 film, Drums Along the Mohawk.

The “Crumbs Along the Mohawk” ice cream flavor is described by Stewart’s: “Graham cracker flavored ice cream with graham cracker pieces and a caramel swirl.” The name “Crumbs Along the Mohawk” has not been trademarked, and there are recipes for making the flavor at home.

Wikipedia: Mohawk River
The Mohawk River is a 149-mile-long (240 km) river in the U.S. state of New York. It is the largest tributary of the Hudson River. The Mohawk flows into the Hudson in the Capital District, a few miles north of the city of Albany. The river is named for the Mohawk Nation of the Iroquois Confederacy. It is a major waterway in north-central New York.

Wikipedia: Drums Along the Mohawk
Drums Along the Mohawk is a 1939 historical Technicolor film based upon a 1936 novel of the same name by American author, Walter D. Edmonds. The film was produced by Darryl F. Zanuck and directed by John Ford. Henry Fonda and Claudette Colbert portray settlers on the New York frontier during the American Revolution. The couple suffer British, Tory, and Indian attacks on their farm before the Revolution ends and peace is restored. The film—Ford’s first color feature—was well received, was nominated for two Academy Awards and became a major box office success, grossing over US$1 million in its first year.

Stewart’s is known for its creative ways with ice cream—like the recent Budget Crunch, whose price grew with the delay in passing the state budget.

New in the freezers of the ubiquitous chain is Crumbs Along the Mohawk. The super-sweet confection consists of graham cracker-flavored ice cream flavored with bits of graham cracker and caramel swirl.

Stewart’s Crumbs along the Mohawk Ice Cream Review
(...)
Stewart’s has an array of flavors but one of my favorites has to be their Crumbs Along The Mohawk ice cream. Described as “Graham cracker flavored ice cream with a graham cracker pieces and a caramel swirl” what’s not to love about this flavor?

The coloring might not seem too appealing as every component is about the same color. What it lacks visually it more than makes up for in taste. The base literally tastes like a graham cracker. That’s no small feat as most mainstream brands have trouble achieving that. There’s a nice bit of molasses and hints of honey in the background of the graham flavor.

Stewart’s Shops loves ice cream almost as much as the customers do. The convenience store chain has its own plant in Greenfield Center where it creates its own ice cream.

But how does Crumbs Along the Mohawk get from someone’s idea to your cone?
