Dallitude or Dallatude (Dallas attitude)

“Dallitude” (somewhat less frequently spelled “Dallatude”) is a “Dallas attitude.” It has been described (below) as “snobby elitism.”

The term “Dallatude” is found on a gay newsgroup posting from 1999; the term possibly originated in the gay community in Dallas.

Wikipedia: Dallas, Texas
Dallas (pronounced /ˈdæləs/) is the third-largest (as estimated by the United States Census Bureau on 1 July 2006) city in the state of Texas and the ninth-largest in the United States. The city covers 342.5 square miles (887 km²), not including water area, and is the county seat of Dallas County. As of June 23, 2008, U.S. Census estimates the population of Dallas at 1,300,350 people.

The city is the main economic center of the 12-county Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area—at over 6.1 million people, it is the fourth-largest metropolitan area in the United States.

Dallas is also listed as a gamma world city by the Loughborough University Globalization and World Cities Study Group & Network.

Dallas was founded in 1841 and formally incorporated as a city on February 1856. The city’s economy is primarily based on the petroleum industry, telecommunications, computer technology, banking, and transportation. It is the core of the largest inland metropolitan area in the United States and lacks any navigable link to the sea—Dallas’s prominence despite this comes from its historical importance as a center for the oil and cotton industries, its position along numerous railroad lines, and a strong industrial and financial sector.

It just might be Dallitude as well.  I have absolutely no idea sometimes with this city.  It’s not any better in the suburbs of Las Colinas either.

When I first moved to Dallas, I found myself enjoying “Dallitude” - the desire to FIT IN with the others.

When I was living in Dallas, there was a popular coinage used amongst the populace: “Dallitude”.  (see also Abercrombie and Fitch…“attitude”). Its somewhat of a gay thing too.

I have Dallitude. I have a lot of Dallitude.

I’m not sure where that phrase was coined, but I know I’ve heard my Dad use it quite a few times, and a search on the word brought up a whole lot of ‘Gay’ message boards, so Brian… you definitley have Dallitude. JK.

So what is Dallitude? Well it’s not in the Merriam-Webster dictionary. Yet. But if you are from Dallas you probably know exactly what I’m talking about. Dallitude is our own brand of snobby elitism. And we love it.

I developed my extreme case of Dallitude when I hit about 16. You see, when I was younger I didn’t like Dallas, but in much of a way that no kid likes his hometown. I wanted to get out of the city, and badly. I hated that anytime I would travel with my family I would have to explain that Texas is not a desert. We do not ride horses. Country music is not very popular. And most of all, we do not sound like back-ass hicks.

Losing the city boy
Tuesday January 2, 2007 at 6:06 pm
I can’t possibly explain why, let alone identify precisely when it started, but I’ve grown terribly disenchanted with city life.  It could be that I’m just burned out with Dallas and the surrounding area, what with its overflowing infestation of selfish chumps, the mindless troglodytes who appear to vastly outnumber the decent folk, the city’s constant meddling and screwing up and inescapable asinine activities, and the overall flavor of life driven by greed, want, greed, want, and more greed and want.  Add to that the general Texas conservatism replete with fanatical religious boobs on every street corner and yelling from every open window.  The air rests heavily each day with the pungent stench of Dallitude, that personality disorder that besets nearly everyone in the metroplex with a sense of deserving, a sense of entitlement, and a sense of superiority, none of which apply.  It’s disheartening at best.

Dallitude (materialism & money)
Has anyone else noticed the materialistic nature of Dallas? I moved to Plano with my family in ‘02 and started as a junior at Plano West. I came from ‘burbs of Chicago but was really shocked at the cars kids drove. The student parking lot looked better than the teachers parking lot.
