Dellionaire (Dell computer millionaire)

Dell Inc. is one of the largest companies in America. In the late 1990s, it seemed that whoever worked for Dell or owned large amounts of Dell stock was a millionaire, or “Dell millionaire,” or “Dellionaire.” The term “Dellionaire” dates from 1998. The internet bubble popped in 2000 and the term is somewhat historical today.

Wikipedia: Dell
Dell Inc.NASDAQ: DELL SEHK: 4331), an American computer-hardware company based in Round Rock, Texas, develops, manufactures, sells and supports a wide range of personal computers, servers, data storage devices, network switches, personal digital assistants (PDAs), software, computer peripherals, and more. As of 2006 Dell employs more than 63,700 people worldwide and manufactures more computers than any other organization in the world. According to the Fortune 500 2006 list, Dell ranks as the 25th-largest company in the United States by revenue. In 2006, Fortune magazine ranked Dell as No. 8 on its annual list of the most-admired companies in the United States. One publication has identified Dell as one of 38 high-performance companies in the S&P 500 which consistently out-performed the market over the previous 15 years.

Word Spy
Dellionaire noun. A rich person whose wealth is based on owning stock in Dell Computer Corporation.

Example Citation:
”[Michael Dell] made his money by grafting an old idea to a new business: he eliminated the middleman (and avoided the inventory costs of his rivals) by building computers to order and selling them direct to consumers.

That simple scheme made millionaires of many of Mr. Dell’s early employees, even secretaries and clerks, and it made billionaires of some. . . .Soon all of Austin was gossiping about the new ‘Dellionaires’.”

Additionally, fear mongering based on race/economics is non-sensical in our current economy.  I’m building a new house here in Austin, TX.  Unemployment is 2% or so, and average incomes here are somewhat higher than the national average due to a heavily high-tech industrial base.  There is not a single shingle, wallboard, pipe, or electrical outlet in my new house that was not put there by mexican immigrants.  Are they keeping some “white man” from a good job? Hell no, contractors drive from construction site to construction site trying to bribe trades away to their jobsites because of severe shortages in construction laborers.  McDonalds pays $8/hour to start, for heaven’s sake. Besides, the “white man” is probably working for that jew, Michael Dell, who employees half the city and has created more wealth amongst his employees than exists in some 3rd world countries.  There are something like 1500 “dellionaires” here in austin—Dell employees who are millionaires because of stock options, etc. (My husband and I are will be the only people living on our new street who are not Dell employees)

My heart has told me go with the flow, follow the trend as the trend is your friend…..my brain on the other hand has told me to stay away from the high fliers such as amazon, etc., but how do I explain to family and friends that I too have not become a “dellionaire” and am just a poor looser bearly making ends meet? (especially over the Holiday dinner table)
