Democracy Plaza (NBC’s Rockefeller Center election headquarters)

“Democracy Plaza” is the name that NBC has used in 2004 (and other subsequent presidential elections) for its election headquarters at Rockefeller Center. The skating rink is transformed into a large election map of the United States. Interactive exhibits about politics are placed throughout Rockefeller Center, or “Democracy Plaza.”

NBC has operated ‘Democracy Plaza” for about a week, ending on election day.

‘Democracy Plaza’ highlights the joy of voting

NEW YORK — As America ponders a pivotal election in 2004, a 2-1/2 week celebration of American democracy and citizenship will blossom in the public spaces of NBC News headquarters at Rockefeller Center. Conceived by NBC and sponsored by Bank of America, “Democracy Plaza” opened to the public on Wednesday, October 20, two weeks before Election Day, and will run through Friday, November 5.

Besides inspiring exhibits, historic artifacts and an interactive forum where the public can explore issues of democracy and even register to vote, Democracy Plaza will hum with activity on Election Night, when it will serve as the venue for the live Election Night coverage of NBC News, Telemundo and MSNBC.

Democracy Plaza Readies For Its Close-Up
By Alex Weprin on November 6, 2012 11:24 AM
For the third-straight Presidential election, NBC is turning the skating rink and Rockefeller Plaza around it, into its election news hub “Democracy Plaza.” An outline of the United States lies a half inch under the ice, and will be filled in as each state goes red for Romney or blue for Obama. Red and blue curtains will rise up 30 Rock as electoral votes are counted — the 16th floor is the crucial 270 mark. And for the first time, Democracy Plaza will serve as a hub for all the NBC News outlets, with NBC, MSNBC, Telemundo and CNBC all either anchoring or having a presence there tonight.

“We don’t just have the broadcast channel, we have the cable channel, we don’t do two hours of the “Today” show, we do four, and when you come to Democracy Plaza, we are not just doing election coverage, we are doing all of this,” NBC News president Steve Capus told TVNewser last night, as he signaled toward the rink.

Democracy Plaza returns to Rockefeller for it’s 2012 election night coverage. It will be open through the night and visitors will be able to see replicas of the Oval Office, White House briefing rooms, and join in on interactive video booths. When the polls start coming in, the ice skating rink’s electoral map will be colored in as each state is called, and suspended buckets representing Republican and Democratic electoral votes will be keeping a running tally along the side of 30 Rockefeller Plaza.
