“Do you know what’s on the menu? Me-n-u”

"Do you know what’s on the menu? Me-n-u”—that is, “me and you”—is a pickup line that has been printed on many images. “Me-N-U Luncheon” was printed in a 1940 newspaper. “Pepsi-Cola’s on the menu. (me-n-u, get it?)” was a slangy advertisement that appeared in many newspapers in 1942.

“Compliments of creepy pickup line guy: Know what sounds good? It’s on the menu. Yeah, its me-n-u, baby” was posted on Twitter on December 5, 2009.

23 May 1940, Carroll (IA) Daily Herald, “Social Calendar,” pg. 4, col. 6:
Me-N-U Luncheon. Mrs. Edward Bromert.

24 April 1942, Daily Northwestern (Evanston, IL), pg. 5, col. 3 ad:
“SHAKE A SHANK, ZOMBIES! THE JOY BOYS ARE TAKING US SHIN-CRACKING AND PEPSI-COLA’S ON THE ME AN’ YOU. NO WOOFIN’!*
*ENGLISH TRANSLATION
This dilly is giving the hurry-up sign to tell her girl friends because the boys are taking them dancing and Pepsi-Cola’s on the menu. (me-n-u, get it?) Just the thing for a college man’s budget, too.

10 February 1962, Battle Creek (MI) Enquirer and News, “Church Events,” pg. 6, col. 7:
Me-N-U, dinner, 6:30 p.m., in Parish House.

24 February 1965, The Daily Home News (New Brunswick, NJ), pg. 33, col. 2 classified ad:
WAITRESS—Experienced. 6 days. No Sun. Apple in person Me-n-u Luncheonette, 427 Main St., Metuchen.

25 April 2005, Evening News (Edinburgh, Scotland), “Bagging a vital title in shop name game” by Julia Horton, pg. 18:
7. ME-N-U
Owner Maria Angelini gave a whole new meaning to putting yourself on the menu with this play on words at her Bruntsfield cafe,

in Leven Street. Maria says: “It took me a wee while to come up with it. I was thinking about the word menu and then just thought of putting in a couple of hyphens to make it read me and you as well.”
