“Don’t hurt people and don’t take their stuff”

“Don’t hurt people and don’t take their stuff” is a Libertarian saying that has been printed on many images.

Barbara Howe, a Libertarian Party candidate for North Carolina governor in 2000, was quoted in the Charlotte (NY) Observer on September 24, 2000:

“‘There are two simple rules,’ she said. ‘Don’t hurt people, and don’t take their stuff.’”

”@Brent_Worth maybe have your own morallity and let others have theres. the only rules should be don’t hurt people and don’t take their stuff” was posted on Twitter by Kevin Koskella on March 21, 2009. “Legislation should be minimal. Don’t hurt people, don’t take their stuff. Legislating who can marry? Pointless” was posted on Twitter by Black to the Future on August 4, 2010. “Don’t hurt people and don’t take their stuff” was posted on Twitter by Dean Clancy on November 11, 2011. “#Social_justice is either a derivative of the ethical axiom,‘Don’t hurt people, or take their stuff’, or it is a prescription for #injustice” was posted on Twitter by Jacob on February 1, 2012.

Matt Kibbe, President and Chief Community Organizer of Free the People and a previous president of FreedomWorks, lectured on this subject in 2013 and wrote the book Don’t Hurt People and Don’t Take Their Stuff: A Libertarian Manifesto (2014). “@mkibbe speaking at #MCForum ‘Don’t hurt people and don’t take their stuff.’ #FW @Freedomworks #tcot #tlot” was posted on Twitter by Terry Kibbe on March 27, 2013.

“You become a libertarian when you realize that it’s wrong to hurt people and take their stuff. You become an anarchist when you realize that there are no exceptions” is a related saying.

(Barbara Howe, Libertarian candidate for NC governor.—ed.)
Howe tried to explain the Libertarian philosophy—less government, more personal freedom—to the crowd of about 100 Wake County students, who waved signs with their schools’ names.

“There are two simple rules,” she said. “Don’t hurt people, and don’t take their stuff.”

21) Six rules for liberty
Source: Fox News Forum
by Matt Kibbe

“Don’t hurt people, and don’t take their stuff. That’s it, in a nutshell. Everyone should be free to live their lives as they think best, so long as they don’t hurt other people and don’t take other people’s stuff. I am not a moral philosopher, and I don’t particularly aspire to be one. But the rules for liberty are simple and straightforward. They’re blindly applied across the board, not doled out discriminately by meddling politicians and government bureaucrats. They define our actions at every level of society, from federal government to local communities, towards friends and enemies both foreign and domestic” [editor’s note: very well summarized; I might have to go buy the book - SAT] (04/07/14)

I think @mkibbe shortened version of NAP, don’t hurt people, don’t take their stuff is accurate. I think people disagree on the hurt part. Being an asshole can cause pain to another person and that is a huge miss for many.
