“Don’t retreat—reload”

Sarah Palin (the former governor of Alaska and Republican party candidate for vice president in 2008) tweeted on March 23, 2010: “Commonsense Conservatives & lovers of America: ‘Don’t Retreat, Instead - RELOAD!’” It is unclear if Palin used the “retreat/reload” saying in 2008 or 2009, but it was popularized in 2010. “Don’t retreat—reload” has been popular with tea party Constitutionalists who support Second Amendment gun ownership rights.

A similarly worded saying has been cited in print since at least January 2005: “I don’t retreat. I reload.” Another similarly worded saying from at least February 2007 is: “Never Retreat…Just Reload.”

Sarah Palin wants to “get America back on track” and “reload and not retreat,” but literally no one knows what that means.

Ms. Slaughter referred, among other things, to a Twitter message in which Sarah Palin, the 2008 Republican vice-presidential nominee, urged her followers, “Don’t Retreat, Instead - RELOAD!”
