“Avoid any food that has a TV commercial”

“The key to healthy eating? Avoid any food that has a TV commercial” is a saying that has been printed on posters. The saying has been cited on Twitter since November 14, 2012.

Commercials are often for processed foods; fruits and vegetables usually don’t have television commercials. However, even healthy foods often have an industry group that advertises. For example, the “got milk?” campaign ran television advertisements. There have also been television advertising campaigns for avocados, bananas, eggs, pork, beef, pistachios, orange juice and bottled water.

What about milk & eggs? I see commercials for those all the time. Water too.
I call BS.

That would mean a healthy diet would exclude those foods that are advertised, with no regards to context and dosage. Also things like beef, pork, veggies etc are advertised.

“The incredible, edible egg.”
“Beef, it’s what’s for dinner.”
“Got milk?”

The problem with generalizations is that there’s always something out there to shatter them.

IS ALL FOOD ADVERTISED ON TELEVISION BAD FOR YOU?

And if you are to simply tell your kids “if it is advertised on television, it MUST be bad for you” then how are you going to get them to eat a banana?

Sorry meme maker, you’ve missed the mark on this one. Sadly, misinformation like this is shared every day. For all the good the information age has brought us, there are plenty who are using it to spread the wrong message.

So next time you see one of these motivational memes, stop and think before you share. Okay, these aren’t as bad a urban legends or scams, but still, we can all aim to be a little smarter, don’t you think?

Now excuse me, I’m off to make my body sing (that’s eating a banana, okay?)
