“English major. You do the math”

“I’m an English major. You do the math” is a saying that has been printed on many images. “You do the math” is an expression that means “you figure it out,” but sometimes it actually refers to doing math.

“My loans have been accruing at a rate of 10 percent and now they have burgeoned to - well, I’m an English major; you do the math” was on NPR-Morning Edition (Washington, DC) on January 19, 2007. “I have two new must have tshirts - English Major, You Do The Math” was posted on Twitter by Elizabeth Stone on June 4, 2007. “I am going to buy the tee shirt which says, ‘I’m an English major. You do the math’” was posted on the newsgroup rec.arts.sf.composition on August 4, 2007. “To quote a T-shirt I recently saw, ‘I’m an English major; you do the math’” was printed in the Reno (NV) Gazette-Journal on November 30, 2008.

19 January 2007, NPR-Morning Edition (Washington, DC), “Still Paying Off That Student Loan”:
Okay, so without my college degree I would not have been able to get my current job. For that I’m grateful, but at what cost? My loans have been accruing at a rate of 10 percent and now they have burgeoned to - well, I’m an English major; you do the math.

I haven’t the faintest idea. (I am going to buy the tee shirt which says, “I’m an English major. You do the math.”) She is the one who took the economics courses.
