NYPD (New York Pass Defense)

The 2016-17 New York Giants football secondary was nicknamed “New York Pass Defense” (NYPD), with a nod to the New York Police Department (NYPD). Tom Rock, a sportwriter for Newsday (Long Island, NY), wrote on December 13, 2016 an article titled, “Giants’ secondary deserves a nickname — but what?” Rock posted on Twitter the same day:

“How about NYPD? New York Pass Defense?”

“New York Pizza Dept.” is another popular use of “NYPD.”

Giants’ secondary deserves a nickname — but what?

The only thing missing from the Giants’ secondary this season seems to be a nickname. All the greats have one. Seattle has the Legion of Boom. Denver has the No Fly Zone.

The Giants? They’re working on it.

“I didn’t come up with that, the fans actually came up with that,” Landon Collins said. “We (were) just trying to figure out what to call our group and they came up with it. We stuck to it. (Cornerbacks) coach (Tim) Walton is the one that brings the name up all the time and we just stuck with it. Call ourselves NYPD.”

It began a few weeks ago, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie said. And Collins said Janoris Jenkins was the inspiration.

Real NYPD honors Giants’ ‘New York Pass Defense’

The actual NYPD showed up at the Giants’ facility Friday to visit their namesakes and they came bearing gifts.

Members of the New York Police Department football team brought boxes of ski hats and baseball caps with the words “NYPD Football” printed on them to hand out to members of the Giants’ secondary. The group, which has become a dominant unit this season, has adopted the nickname “NYPD,” which stands for “New York Pass Defense.”

The secondary is embracing the NYPD nickname (New York Pass Defense) bestowed by Newsday beat writer Tom Rock. Some of New York’s finest, in fact, delivered NYPD Football baseball caps and winter hats to the facility on Thursday. Collins, 22, received them from the police in person, and they were passed out Friday.
