“Every time you make a typo, the errorists win”

"Every time you make a typo, the errorists win” is a jocular saying that has been printed on many gift items, such as posters, coffee mugs and T-shirts. “The errorists win” is a pun on “If (...) then the terrorists win,” a phrase popularized after the attacks on New York’s World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.

“Maybe I’m just being anal, but if I don’t correct people’s spelling and grammar then it’s sort of like the errorists win” was cited on Twitter on October 10, 2009. “Every time you make a typo, the errorists win” was cited on Twitter on October 11, 2010. Authorship of the saying is unknown; Fred Baube was credited on October 27, 2010.

Because language is naturally playful, we human beings love to make jokes about words. Here, in order of length, are a dozen of my favorite verbal tour de farces:

• Bad spellers of the world, untie!
• Every time you make a typo, the errorists win.
