Falloon (float + balloon)

A “falloon” is a combination float/balloon; the term was introduced at Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The first “falloon” was introduced to the parade about 1990—although some claim that the “falloon” term dates to the 1980s.

An alternative name for a balloon/float—“bloat”—was disregarded (see below).

So the dog, who has no name other than ‘‘the Pets.com sock-puppet dog,’’ will be a 36-foot-tall ‘‘falloon,’’ which is what Macy’s calls a balloon that rides on a float.

Falloons and Bloats
It may be February, but preparations for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade go on all year at the Macy’s Parade Studio in Hoboken.

Today at 3 p.m., two studio artisans, John Cheney and Gail McLauglin, will give a talk at the Hoboken Historical Museum about making floats, balloons and falloons—which is what you get when you cross a balloon with a float. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is a falloon.

’‘We thought of calling them ‘bloats,’ but that just didn’t sound right.’’ explained John Piper, vice president of the studio.

The museum is also presenting an exhibition about the studio, which includes scale models, designs and photographs of Mickey Mouse, Bugs Bunny, Snoopy and other beloved balloons, and runs through Feb. 24. Information: (201) 656-2240.
