“Feed a pigeon, breed a rat”

Some people feed pigeons in New York City, and rats eat the same food. “Feed a pigeon, breed a rat” was a poster made by New York City’s Health Department.

Even where pigeon feeding is not prohibited, both the Parks and Health Departments discourage the practice, citing litter and rodent problems. A Health Department poster warns: “Feed a Pigeon, Breed a Rat.”

Rats also love garbage, pigeon food and animal feces. So Pascone cautions homeowners to clean up after their dogs, especially if they’re let out in the yard, and to tightly seal garbage and birdfeed.

“They love pigeon food. Feed a pigeon, breed a rat,” he said, quoting a Health Department poster.

Naaahhh. The preferred pigeon food is seeds. The only breed of rat that was vegan (like pigeons) was killed off centuries back. Pigeons will eat other things (leftover pizza crusts, corn chips, whathaveyou), and if they can eat it, they will leave behind an area that is food free.  But a pigeon that rips open restaurant garbage bags before the disposal dons show up is a very desperate pigeon indeed.

BTW, pigeons are diurnal (for the slope-browed: they come out during the day). That means they eat those bits they like long before the rats appear at night. In short, the pigeons — critters that can’t make you sick (go check the DHMH pigeon page, and read carefully — if you can read at all...) — reduce available food for rats.

As to the little packages of joy they leave behind: A light rain (or a bit of plain water applied with a garden hose, if you’re not a complete couch potato — hey, you can listen to your iPod...) will flush the largely water-soluble stuff away.  Unlike your crap and the rat-crap, pigeon detritus is not really hazardous
