“What’s the difference between a golfer and a fisherman?” (joke)

Golfers are notorious about lying on their golf scores. Fishermen are notorious about lying about the size of a fish that was either caught or that got away.

“The difference between a fisherman and a golfer is that a fisherman never has a bad lie” was printed in a 1951 newspaper. “The difference between a fisherman and a golfer is that a golfer put his lies down on paper” was printed in a 1974 newspaper.

A riddle has been cited in print since at least 2005:

Q: What’s the difference between a golfer and a fisherman?
A: When a golfer lies he doesn’t have to bring anything home to prove it!

3 September 1951, The Enquirer (Cincinnati, OH), “The Voice of the Enquirer,” pg. 6, col. 3:
The difference between a fisherman and a golfer is that a fisherman never has a bad lie.

11 May 1974, Green Bay (WI) Press-Gazette, “Disconnected Thoughts About Almost Anything” by Doug Larson, pg. A-3, col. 4:
The difference between a fisherman and a golfer is that a golfer put his lies down on paper.
