Floater Coffee (cream coffee)

A “floater coffee” is coffee with sugar, and with cream floating on top. Liquor may be added, such as Drambuie, Tia Maria, Jameson Irish Whiskey, Baileys Irish Cream, Disaronno, Cointreau, Captain Morgans or Courvoisier.

It’s not known where floater coffee originated, but it was popular at the Berni Inn chain of British steakhouses (1955-1995) and is served at many Indian restaurants in the United Kingdom.

Wikipedia: Berni Inn
Berni Inn was a chain of British steakhouses, established in 1955. It was established by brothers Frank and Aldo Berni, who modelled the chain on restaurants they had seen in America. (...) By 1970 the chain comprised 147 hotels and restaurants, including the New Inn at Gloucester, the Mitre at Oxford, and several in Japan. It was the largest food chain outside the USA. (...) Berni Inn was sold to Whitbread in 1995, who converted the outlets into their own Beefeater and Brewers Fayre restaurants.

15 August 1999, Sunday Mercury (Birmingham, UK), “Sunday Special,” pg. 44:
I settled sanctimoniously for the floater coffee (pounds 1.25) but it was so sweet it probably contained more calories than everyone else’s combined.

There is something reassuringly retro about the humble floater coffee. Once the preserve of Berni Inns and seaside hotels, they are still a permanent fixture on the laminated dessert menu of most Indian restaurants.
