“Free people don’t ask for permission”

“Free people don’t ask for permission” is an anti-government saying that has been printed on several images. The saying means that free people don’t have to ask (or beg) for licenses from the government to do things, such as to carry guns or to marry.

The idea may be old, but the saying is modern. “Free people don’t ask for permission” was posted on Twitter on March 27, 2013. “Free people do not ask for permission” was posted on Twitter o May 20, 2013.

“Free men do not ask for permission to bear arms” is a related saying from 2009 (but not from American founding father Thomas Jefferson).

SD Lawmaker asks ‘If it pleases the crown’ on the House floor
Republican House Representative Daniel Kaiser, made a bold statement on HB 1072 in front of South Dakota lawmakers on Monday.
(...)
Representative Kaiser emerged straight out of a “Thug Life” meme to defend our Second Amendment rights. He quotes “Free people do not ask for permission to do what’s right” and “If it pleases the crown, may I carry a firearm underneath my sports coat”. This is in reference to a viral social media campaign popularized by the Liberty movement that the United States government is functioning much like a Monarchy from which we must beg for our own rights.
