“Generation Snowflake” refers to young people—especially college students—who can’t handle the real world. They are like a “snowflake”—unique and fragile. Members of “Generation Snowflake” often seek safe spaces against real or perceived microaggressions.
 
The College Misery website began in 2010 and frequently talked about student “snowflakes.” “Generation Snowflake” was cited on May 15, 2011 and October 9, 2011. “Snowflake Generation” was cited on April 20, 2012.
 
“Generation Snowflake, where everyone is unique and special because they all go to college” was posted on Twitter on June 8. 2012. “Generation Snowflake’s music is little more than vapid, misspelled text messages set to autotune #gensnowflake” was posted on Twitter on March 13, 2015. The “Generation Snowflake” term went viral in 2015.

I wish the snowflakes didn’t have to make their laziness so obvious. Every semester I get emails worded roughly as follows (if I strip away the bullshit and translate it): “Professor, please tell me the absolute minimum amount of work I need to do to get the highest possible grade in this course. Please tell me exactly what I need to do and think. Please give me exactly that information. Please tell me 100% exactly without requiring me to think critically or process information. I don’t really want to have to learn anything. I just want to vomit up pre-chewed information without having to work or think. That is what college is about, in my mind: doing the least amount of work possible while reaping the greatest possible reward. I don’t know why this surprises you, since my culture values instant gratification, pleasure, avoidance of work, and avoidance of responsibility above all else. Anything that interferes with my immediate happiness is wrong and I have a right to not do it.”

One of them does, at least. Robin Pecknold (b. 1986) of the Fleet Foxes is the songwriter, and he sings of the challenges of growing up in Generation Snowflake. The song called, “Helplessness Blues,” from the album of the same name.

The Definition of a Snowflake
Every now and again someone from outside my profession hears me refer to students as snowflakes and asks what I mean. “What do you mean?” they ask, being unfamiliar with the kinds of behaviours and attitudes that you and I, dear reader, experience on a daily basis. And I try to explain, often using (as I recommend to my snowflakes), examples to illustrate my thesis. Sometimes people get it, especially if they have jobs which put them in supervisory positions over gradflakes. But sometimes they just think it is me being an old crank, and hating my job, and not understanding the current generation, or whatever.

Saw a letter in the paper today from a father wondering how to deal with his daughter, who is being a prize twit, angry, hostile and impossible to deal with, because he can’t pay for her to move out of the house, give her a car, etc etc, like all her spoiled friends.  He is paying for her tuition at an excellent university; but he hasn’t got the money to buy her a sports car and a condo too.

I love how, every 25 years or so, some chancer with a sociology degree and a deadline christens a generation or a social substrata with a gormless moniker like Generation Y or Sloane Ranger. The latest I’ve heard is Generation Snowflake - maybe you’ve come across it. It’s the idea that everyone born after 1990 is essentially egotistical, self-obsessed, fragile and entitled.
