“Goodbye, cruel world!” (drinking saying)

“Goodbye, cruel world” has been the title of several songs and has been printed on many images. It is what someone might say before committing suicide.

“Good-bye, cruel world” was written in an alleged suicide note printed in the St. Louis (MO) Daily Globe-Democrat on August 5, 1875, and the Chicago (IL) Daily News on September 26, 1879.

“Good-bye, cruel world” is such as cliché that it is more often used for comic effect to express mock desperation than to express actual suicidal thoughts.

“Good-bye, cruel world” has also been spoken before someone takes a shot of hard liquor. “Brother’s giving me a shot of Moonshine from Kentucky… Goodbye cruel world” was posted on Twitter by Soapbox Vizzy on July 21, 2010. “Goodbye, cruel world! #straightvodka” was posted on Twitter by Peach Salinger on February 18, 2012.

Disappearance of a Musical Composer.—Robert Mills, a musical composer, for several years past employed by Huck & Hill, music publishers, disappeared on Monday, and it is feared has committed suicide. Mr. Hill found the note, addressed to the firm, yesterday:

“I do hereby bequeath to Messrs. Huck & Hill all right to use and published these enclosed hymn tunes. They are the very last that I shall write prior to leaving this world of misery and woe.

“I have tried very hard to get something to do, but have failed every time, and I have grown weary in the utter unrealization of all my hopes and expectations. Good-bye, cruel world. I leave you for another that, although I know nothing concerning it, cannot be worse than this. Yours,
ROBERT MILLS
