Great Under Major Pressure (GUMP)

“Great Under Major Pressure (GUMP)” is a popular term in South Florida high school football, where it began. Miami (FL) Northwestern High School starting quarterback Teddy Bridgewater and backup E. J. Hilliard were both called “Gump” because Hilliard like the movie Forrest Gump (1994). “Great Under Major Pressure” became a backronym (back acronym) of “Gump.”

Bridgewater later starred at the University of Lousville (KY) and was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings. Hilliard went to Florida International University.“Great Under Major Pressure (GUMP)” became popular in 2013 along with Bridgewater’s success at Louisville.

Teddy Bridgewater also goes by GUMP.

It is an acronym he acquired in high school, one he can’t seem to shake, and one that is increasingly apt.

The letters stand for Great Under Major Pressure. Bridgewater shares the credit with high school teammate E.J. Hilliard, and dissenting opinions are few. The University of Louisville quarterback capped a sensational sophomore season last month with a trophy-worthy performance in the Sugar Bowl that vaulted him into the national consciousness and Heisman Trophy handicapping. ...

Louisville QB Teddy Bridgewater embraces nickname ‘Gump’

If you want to call Louisville junior quarterback Teddy Bridgewater “Gump” (as in Forrest Gump), that’s fine with him.

Bridgewater, a leading Heisman contender, has been called “Gump” since his days in high school at Miami Northwestern. It was a moniker he shared with his backup, E.J. Hilliard, and to them, it was a badge of honor.

Bridgewater told the Louisville Courier-Journal that Hilliard was a fan of the movie, which starred Tom Hanks as the fictional character Forrest Gump (who famously played football at Alabama) and won the Oscar for best picture in 1994.

Bridgewater on Hilliard: “All of his jokes were related to the movie Forrest Gump, so everyone would call him ‘Gump.’”

The two quarterbacks embraced the nickname.

AUBURN, Alabama—Auburn’s final drive against Texas A&M had a strong dose of Florida flavor.

Running back Tre Mason got the bulk of the work, carrying the ball six times for 36 yards and the go-ahead touchdown with 1:19 remaining. Freshman Marcus Davis had a big play to set up the touchdown thanks to a 27-yard catch on third-and-9.

“That’s my boy. We’re from the same hometown: Palm Beach, Florida,” Mason said. “We have a mindset coming from there. It’s called G.U.M.P.: Great Under Major Pressure.”
