“Happiness is not the absence of problems, but the ability to deal with them”

“Happiness is not the absence of problems, but the ability to deal with them” is a popular quotation that has been printed on posters. but the quotation is of uncertain origin. “Happiness is not the absence of conflict but the ability to cope with it” has been cited in print since at least 1985. “Happiness is not the absence of problems, but the ability to deal with them” has been cited in print since at least 1996.

“Happiness is not the absence of problems, but the ability to deal with them” was credited to French writer Charles de Montesquieu (1689-1755) in 2011, but it’s not known if he ever wrote it. Steve Maraboli included the quotation in his book, Life, the Truth, and Being Free (2009), but Maraboli did not claim to have coined it (although several posters cite his name). American author H. Jackson Brown, Jr. is sometimes credited for the quotation, but it’s not known if he ever said it.
