“Hello darkness, my old friend. Soon you’ll be here at 5 p.m.” (September saying)

“Hello darkness, my old friend. Soon you’ll start at 4 p.m./5 p.m.” is a saying for late September or early October. Darkness comes earlier beginning at that time of year. “Hello darkness, my old friend. I’ve come to talk with you again” are the opening lyrics of the Simon and Garfunkel song, “The Sound of Silence.”

Wikipedia: The Sound of Silence
“The Sound of Silence”, originally “The Sounds of Silence”, is a song by the American music duo Simon & Garfunkel. The song was written by Paul Simon over several months in 1963 and 1964. A studio audition led to the duo signing a record deal with Columbia Records, and the original ‘acoustic’ version of the song was recorded in March 1964 at Columbia Studios in New York City and included on their debut album, Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M..
