“Here’s to you and here’s to me. May we never disagree” (toast)

“Here’s to you and here’s to me, the best of friends we’ll always be. But if by chance we disagree, to hell with you and here’s to me!” (or “Here’s to you and here’s to me. May we never disagree. But if we do, to hell with you, and here’s to me!”) is a toast that has been printed on many images. There are several versions, and authorship is unknown.

This was printed in the Moravia (IA) Union on January 15, 1948:

“Here’s to you,
And here’s to me,
And may we never disagree,
But if we do,
The heck with you,
Here’s to me.”

but if by chance we disagree, to hell with you and here’s to me!”
-Irish toast”

“Here’s to you and here’s to me.
May we never disagree.
But should we start to fight and ‘cuss,
Here’s to me.
- Frank Masterson”

There is no evidence that the toast originated in Ireland, or that an original version was by Frank Masterson.
