“His shooting range starts when he enters the gym” (basketball saying)

Basketball players have shooting ranges. For a slow center, the shooting range could be just a few feet around the basket. For a shooting guard, the shooting range is much further out.

“His shooting ranger starts when he enters the gym” or “his shooting range begins when he steps off the bus” is a frequent joke. “I joke that my shooting range starts when I get out my car in the parking lot” was cited in 2004. “Whose shooting range begins when she steps off the bus” was cited in 2010 and “whose shooting range begins when he enters the gymnasium” was cited in 2013.

There is nothing wrong with having players who like to shoot and are confident they are good at it. Heck, anyone who has ever seen me play for just a few minutes would tell you I’ll fire it up at the tiniest opening. (I joke that my shooting range starts when I get out my car in the parking lot.) Kobe has every right to want a lot of shots because he is a damned good shooter and an even better scorer.

Thanks largely to the tenacious defense of Mullen guard Autumn Burt, Mileto, whose shooting range begins when she steps off the bus, rarely got a good look at the rim and finished with six free throws before fouling out with 50 seconds left.

Jon Diebler has missed a shot or two in the past three weeks; it just doesn’t seem like he has. His shooting range starts when the Buckeyes get off the bus.

Keep in mind, after playing just 2 seasons at Cal, Ryan Anderson is just 23 years old. He’s got a long way to go—but the kid is well on his way.

Ryan is extremely coachable. He’s got a high basketball IQ. His shooting range begins when he gets off the team bus.

But what if the 2012-13 season is the zenith of the J.R. Smith experience, and what follows from here is a long unraveling of overpaid inconsistency? “A Long Unraveling of Overpaid Inconsistency” could double as a title for a history of the New York Knicks, post-1973, and this is why there should be a long pause before reupping with a fun-but-maddening player who thinks his shooting range begins when the plane crosses Newfoundland air space.
