Many people cry when they chop up onions, and this is the subject of a popular dark joke. “When I cut up onions, it always makes me cry. He was a good dog and will be missed” was posted on Twitter by Mark Gavin on July 14, 2011. “I cried the other day while i was chopping onions. onions was such a good dog” was posted on Twitter by Sam Gelfand on September 4, 2011.
 
“I made chili con carne from Scratch. I’ll miss Scratch. He was a good dog” and “My kids threw up when I told them I’d put Ginger in the curry. They really loved that cat” are similar jokes on pet names. This joke was told during the 2019-20 coronavirus outbreak: “The kids asked what was for dinner and I told them ‘Scraps’. They started crying. Spoiled brats, it’s really hard to get food at the moment thanks to the panic buying. And it was a stupid name for a dog anyway.”
