"From Chris Purdy’s Facebook Status: I farted in the lift at work this morning.... it was wrong on so many levels” was posted on Twitter on October 7, 2009. “I farted in an elevator...” is an Americanized version of the joke.

“‘I farted in a lift today. It was wrong on so many levels.’ Gotta love Stewart Francis!” was posted on Twitter on January 13, 2010. Canadian comedian Stewart Francis included the joke in his book Pun Direction (2013), and he most probably told the joke first.

“Crime in multi-story car parks is wrong on so many levels” and “Why are elevator jokes always funny?"/"Because they work on so many different levels” are similar jokes.
