“I just realized why this month is called ‘May.’ It may rain, it may snow…”

“THERE seems to be a particular reason why the month of May should be marked with floods, unless it be the old rule that the month is so called because it may rain, it may snow, it may freeze, it may anything, which pretty well describes it in this and the adjacent parts of the world” was printed in the New-York (NY) Tribune, on May 31, 1914. “The month which has just ended certainly went far to vindicating the folk legend that it is called May because it may rain, may shine, may blow, may snow, may anything” was printed in the New-York (NY) Tribune on June 2, 1923.

“I just realized why this month is called May. It may rain, it may snow, it may be 70 degrees, it may be 20 degrees” was posted on Facebook by Trenton First United Church, Trenton Nova Scotia on May 5, 2020. The saying is of uncertain origin and has been printed on many images.

31 May 1914, New-York (NY) Tribune, Special Feature Section, pg. 4, col. 1:
MAY IS THE MONTH OF FLOODS
THERE seems to be a particular reason why the month of May should be marked with floods, unless it be the old rule that the month is so called because it may rain, it may snow, it may freeze, it may anything, which pretty well describes it in this and the adjacent parts of the world.

2 June 1923, New-York (NY) Tribune, editorial, pg. 12, col. 3:
The Sun Not Played Out
The month which has just ended certainly went far to vindicating the folk legend that it is called May because it may rain, may shine, may blow, may snow, may anything.
