“I like my coffee like I like my slaves. Free”

“I like my women like I like my coffee” is a meme that has been used on many images. “A Negro comedian pulled this one: ‘I like my coffee strong and black—the same way I like my women’” was cited in the New York (NY) Amsterdam News in July 1944. “Hot..and black, too” was an answer in 1973. “Hot and sweet” was cited in 1974. “Hot, sweet and black” was cited in 1994.

“I like my coffee like I like my slaves” is a variation. The expected answer is “black,” by the jocular answer is “free.” American stand-up comedian Ben Kronberg has told the joke in his act since at least 2007. “Free, you racist” was posted on Twitter on October 2, 2012.

The joke has been printed on several images.

12 May 1973, Journal and Guide (Norfolk, VA), “I Like My Coffee Like I Like My Women…,” pg. 10, col. 5:
“Madam,’ he said, ‘our coffee is cold. I like my coffee like I like my women—Hot!’

“‘Yes Sir,’ she replied with a grin. ‘And Black, too?’”

Neil Hamburger @ the Larimer Lounge

The night started with a typically rambling set by Denverite (and soon-to-be Los Angelino) Ben Kronberg, who wore his signature white, little-girl cowboy boots while hunched over a keyboard and drum machine. Some jokes were familiar to anyone that’s seen him lately (sample: “I like my coffee like I like my slaves — free”) but the way the set used its chunks of cheesy synth and percussion helped set it apart from recent Squire Lounge open-mic nights with Wrist Deep Productions cohorts Adam Cayton-Holland, Greg Baumhauer and others.
