“I love the smell of possibility in the morning”

“I love the smell of napalm in the morning” is a famous line in the film Apocalypse Now (1979). “I love the smell of possibility in the morning” is a saying that has been printed on posters and coffee mugs. The saying was first cited on Twitter on January 15, 2009, but became popular on Twitter on May 22, 2012.

Charlie Wollborg of the Curve Detroit advertising agency has frequently used the saying.

Directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Written by Francis Ford Coppola and John Milius.

You smell that? Do you smell that? Napalm, son. Nothing else in the world smells like that. I love the smell of napalm in the morning. You know, one time we had a hill bombed, for 12 hours. When it was all over, I walked up. We didn’t find one of ‘em, not one stinkin’ dink body. The smell, you know that gasoline smell, the whole hill. Smelled like . . . victory. Someday this war’s gonna end.
. Note: bolded line is ranked #12 in the American Film Institute’s list of the top 100 movie quotations in American cinema, and has replaced the full reference in popular culture.
