“I never promised you a rose garden”

“I never promised you a rose garden” is a saying that was popularized as the title of a 1964 book by Hannah Green, the pen name of Brooklyn-born author Joanne Greenberg. The novel is about a teenage girl’s battle with schizophrenia; this was followed by a 1977 film and a 2004 play. The song “(I Never Promised You a) Rose Garden” (1970) was written by Joe South and sung by Lynn Anderson.

“I never promised you a rose garden” means the same thing as “I never said this was going to be easy.” “Jesus never promised a rose strewn path when He said ‘take up they cross and follow me’” was cited in print in 1960. The saying is sometimes used when talking about political promises.
