“I took my car in for a service this morning. I couldn’t get it through the church doors”

When a car is getting “a service,” it’s not a religious service, but there are jokes. “There was this Manta Driver who wanted to take his car in for a service…Only problem was he couldn’t get it through the church door!” was posted on the newsgroup eunet.jokes on March 5, 1991. “Vic: ‘I took my car in for a service the other day.’ Bob: ‘How was it?’ Vic: ‘No good. I couldn’t get it through the church doors’” is from the British comedy double act Vic (Reeves) and Bob (Mortimer) and was printed in Vox (London, UK) in January 1994.

The joke has been associated with Vic and Bob, and it’s possible that the team originated it.

Wikipedia: Vic and Bob
Vic and Bob, also known as Reeves and Mortimer, are a British comedy double act consisting of Vic Reeves (born 24 January 1959, real name James Roderick Moir) and Bob Mortimer (born 23 May 1959). They have written and starred in several comedy programmes on British television since 1990, with Reeves having made his first TV appearance in 1986.

Reeves and Mortimer have never been apolitical, but when one of their gags runs thus—Vic: “I took my car in for a service the other day.” Bob: “How was it?” Vic: “No good. I couldn’t get it through the church doors.”—it is clear that even our most innovative comedians seem to b harking back to old-time Variety.

I tried taking my car in for a service yesterday.
It wouldn’t fit through the church doors.
