Wikipedia: One-hit wonder
A one-hit wonder is any entity that achieves mainstream popularity and success for a very short period of time, often for only one piece of work, and becomes known among the general public solely for that momentary success. The term is most commonly used in regard to music performers with only one top-40 hit single that overshadows their other work. Sometimes, artists dubbed “one-hit wonders” in a particular country have had great success in others.

(Oxford English Dictionary)
one-hit wonder n. colloq. a performer, etc., who gains only one popular success before returning to relative anonymity; a song, etc., by such a performer.
[1956 Carroll (Iowa) Daily Times Herald 1 May 2/6 Ramon Monzant, the New York Giants’ one-hit wonder, almost sat out the 1956 season.]
1958 Ottawa Citizen 27 Dec. 12/2 Several one-hit wonders of the old year, will vanish into shellac obscurity.
1966 Los Angeles Times 27 Nov. (West Magazine) 41 One of the nation’s most recent Number 1’s was a monotonous little ditty that went ‘Ma ba-haby duz de Hanky-Panky’... But such ‘one-hit-wonders’ have no sustaining power.
