“If American websites use cookies, do British websites use biscuits?”

An “HTTP cookie” is not something that’s eaten, but there have been several jokes. A popular joke translates American “cookies” to British “biscuits.” Another comment is that biscuit company websites use cookies.

“Just been sternly warned by a biscuit-making site that they use cookies” was posted on Twitter by Kevin Mills on June 13, 2012. “Really confusing when a biscuit-recipe website starts talking about how they use cookies” was posted on Twitter by Catt Turney on August 17, 2012. “The phrase ‘United Biscuits use cookies to track and store your information’ on their website has made me chuckle” was posted on Twitter by Kevin Taylor on August 18, 2012. “Do biscuits websites use cookies?” was posted on Twitter by Liam on October 4, 2012. “Does a biscuit website use cookies?” was posted on Twitter by Gareth Davis on May 26, 2018.

”@lynneguist: does UK use ‘cookies’ or ‘biscuit’ for browser bookmarks?” was posted on Twitter by thelousylinguist on July 16, 2011. “Why do UK websites use cookies instead of biscuits?” was posted on Twitter by iCompute on December 7, 2012. “If .com websites use cookies, should .co.uk sites use biscuits?” was posted on Twitter by European Bunny on November 11, 2014. “If American websites use cookies, shouldn’t British websites use biscuits?” was posted on Twitter by TᕼE ᖴᖇᗩY on March 31, 2020. “If American websites use cookies, do British websites use biscuits?” was posted on Reddit—Oneliners on April 16, 2020.

Wikipedia: HTTP cookie
An HTTP cookie (also called web cookie, Internet cookie, browser cookie, or simply cookie) is a small piece of data sent from a website and stored on the user’s computer by the user’s web browser while the user is browsing. Cookies were designed to be a reliable mechanism for websites to remember stateful information (such as items added in the shopping cart in an online store) or to record the user’s browsing activity (including clicking particular buttons, logging in, or recording which pages were visited in the past). They can also be used to remember arbitrary pieces of information that the user previously entered into form fields such as names, addresses, passwords, and credit card numbers.
