“If I can hear you chew, I have fantasized about your death”

“If I can hear you chew, I have fantasized about your death” is a saying that has been printed on many images. While the statement is meant to be a joke, misophonia (a disorder of decreased tolerance to specific sounds) is a medical condition.

Wikipedia: Misophonia
Misophonia is a disorder of decreased tolerance to specific sounds or their associated stimuli that has been characterized using different language and methodologies. Reactions to trigger sounds range from anger and annoyance to activating a fight-or-flight response. The condition is sometimes called selective sound sensitivity syndrome. Common triggers include oral sounds (e.g. loud breathing, chewing, swallowing), clicking sounds (e.g. keyboard tapping, finger tapping, windshield wipers), and sounds associated with movement (e.g. fidgeting). Hated sounds are often repetitive in nature.

I Have Misophonia — and It’s Not the Joke Everyone Thinks It Is
June 14, 2018
by MARISA HILLMAN
“If I can hear you chew, I have fantasized about your death.” It’s a meme that I’ve been sent more times than I can count, along with viral videos of people losing their minds over someone slurping spaghetti and jokes about how A Quiet Place was written especially for me. I get it; seeing someone get bent out of shape over nothing can be hilarious. But being the one who’s losing their mind? That’s not quite the joke that everyone thinks it is.
