“If it doesn’t open, it’s not your door”

“If it doesn’t open, it’s not your door” is a motivational saying that has been printed on many images. “It is only a door. If it doesn’t open, it is not your door. Everything you need is already here, not behind it. @WiseTitan” was posted on Twitter by Elena Goubanova on November 12, 2013. “If it doesn’t open, it’s not your door…” was posted on Twitter by Holly Miller on June 7, 2014.

The saying means that one will have a “door of opportunity,” but that this is not at every door (and some doors will be closed). Authorship of the saying is unknown, but it possibly originated from an image.

If It Doesn’t Open… It’s Not Your Door
You cannot open a door meant for someone else, it’s just not possible. But you are meant to open your own doors. The best thing you can do as the loved one of someone with an addiction is to stop trying to open the addict’s door, and to instead focus on your own life.

A while ago, I was going through my newsfeed on Facebook, when I came across this proclamation:

If it doesn’t open, it’s not your door.

I thought it was one of the most brilliant pieces of wisdom I’d ever heard—so of course I immediately stole it and shared it on my own Facebook page too. And I’ve been using it—with clients, with friends, and with myself—ever since.

If It Doesn’t Open, It’s Not Your Door

It’s said that if it doesn’t open, it’s not your door. While I understand the meaning of the expression, it’s not necessarily the best metaphor I’ve ever heard to explain that what is meant for us will come to us- and what isn’t, won’t. Because the reality is that we will open many doors in our lives.
