"FC” usually stands for “football club,” not “fried chicken.” “KFC” fast food restaurants had the original name of “Kentucky Fried Chicken.” Many people have suggested that Kentucky should have a football (soccer) club.

In South Africa, the legend took a distinctly local, err, flavour. The name change coincided with the mid-late 1980s flurry of disinvestment from South Africa due to its apartheid policies. As a result, the firm belief here was that, when Kentucky FC (that’s the football club that first introduced wings to soccer) disinvested and sold out their interests to local management, the locals were forced to change the name to KFC, as they no longer had the rights to the real name.
