“If that were true it would be on the news”

“If that was/were true it would be on the news” is a saying that occurs to some people when told of some event (child trafficking, food and vaccine safety, political corruption and more). The assumption is that the news would normally report such things. The expression is often given an ironic twist—that it is probably true if it does not make the news because much of the news is fake.

“If that were true it would be on the news more often” was posted on the newsgroup soc.culture.african.american on May 31, 1998. “If that was true it would be on the news” was posted on the newsgroup alt.alien.research on July 6, 1999. “I always hear .... ‘if that were true it would be on the news’ .... See there that’s the problem” was posted on Twitter by ԼԼƲMƖƝƛƬƖ👁ƘƖԼԼЄƦ on October 27, 2020.

“But if that was true it would be on the news”—the ironic use—was put on an image that was used in a YouTube video on April 4, 2020.
