“If you chum, they will come” (fishing adage)

“If you build it (a baseball field), he (baseball star Shoeless Joe Jackson) will come” is a famous quotation from the baseball film Field of Dreams (1989). “If you chum, they will come” is a rhyming adage said in fishing. Chumming (throwing fish parts and blood in the water to attract fish) is illegal in some parts of the United States.

“If you chum, they will come” has been cited in print since at least 1999. One 2004 citation of this saying referred to political chum (such as buttons, posters and bumper stickers); this chum was used to get people to come to the voting places and vote for the advertised candidate.

Wikipedia: Chumming
Chumming (American English from Powhatan) is the practice of luring animals, usually fish or sharks, by throwing “chum” into the water. Chum often consists of fish parts and blood, which attract fish, particularly sharks owing to their keen sense of smell.

Also known as rubby dubby (West Country and Yorkshire, UK), shirvey or chirvey (Guernsey, Channel Islands), burley or burlying (Australasia), and bait balls.

Chumming is illegal in some parts of the world, such as Alabama, because of the danger it can pose by conditioning sharks to associating feeding with the presence of humans.

Wikiquote: Field of Dreams
Field of Dreams is a 1989 film about an Iowa corn farmer who hears a voice telling him: “If you build it, he will come.” He interprets this as an instruction to build a baseball diamond in his fields; after he does, Shoeless Joe Jackson and other dead baseball players emerge from the cornfields to play ball.

My advice to you is, if you plan to go carpin, if you are on a river, look for bubbles, on stillwater, look for stirred up clouds/sediment and sneak up on em as if you were huntin. Swing your corn out, don’t splash cast it, and if you plan on gettin real serious CHUM. If you chum, they will come.

If you chum, they will come
(...)
While there is no doubt that there is a widespread eagerness to defeat—or re-defeat, as we like to say in Florida—Bush, translating all that willingness into feet on the ground is no easy task. While our buttons, posters and bumper stickers (these materials are known as chum in the business) were hungrily devoured, the real work is a lot less glamorous and a lot more difficult, and takes a lot of effort to coordinate.

“If you chum, they will come”.

Not legal in all states, so check your regulations before you start doing it.

Chumming is an art form, even a science. One thing is sure, effective chumming techniques produce more fish.

Chumming is used when saltwater fishing, and it works for freshwater water fishing. Chum while fishing for crappie at night with submerged night lights.
