“If you tell the truth, it becomes part of your past. If you lie, it becomes part of your future”

“If you tell the truth. it becomes (a) part of your past. If you lie. it becomes (a) part of your future” is a saying that has been printed on many images. The quote is from University of Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino, who confessed to having had an extramarital affair (in 2003) in a press conference on August 12, 2009.

NPR (National Public Radio) reported Pitino’s press conference:

“Mr. RICK PITINO (Head Coach, University of Louisville): When you have a problem, if you tell the truth, your problem becomes part of your past. If you lie, it becomes part of your future.”

The quotation is usually given as “anonymous” and is rarely associated with Rick Pitino, probably because of the non-basketball nature of the quotation.
