“I’m going to stay up on New Year’s Eve this year. Not to see the new year in…”

During the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic, people were happy to see years such as 2020 and 2021 end. “I’m going to stay up on New Year’s Eve this year. Not to see the new year in, but to make sure this one leaves” is a jocular saying that has been printed on many images.

“I’m going to stay up on New Year’s Eve this year. Not to see the New Year in, but to make sure this one leaves” was posted on Facebook by Texas Dreaming on July 11, 2020.

“An optimist stays up until midnight to see the New Year in; a pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves” is the original version of the saying.
