“In journalism, the pay might be low and the hours long, but at least everyone hates you”

There’s a “joke” in journalism that the pay is low and the hours are long—but at least everyone hates you. The saying has been printed on several images.

“Though I learned a great deal from the class, I also learned that I didn’t want to be a reporter.  The pay sucks and everyone hates you - who needs that?” was posted on the newsgroup rec.games.computer.ultima.dragons on July 3, 1998. “The hours are long, the pay is lousy, but at least everybody hates you” was posted on Twitter by “Overheard in the Newsroom” on July 5, 2012.

“Journalism. It’s a tough job with insane pressure and pretty crappy pay. On the other hand, everybody hates you” was posted on Twitter by Francis Lam on September 6, 2016. This version of the saying has been cited the most frequently.

I was taking journalism in college.  Our professor was an experienced journalist who’d worked for a variety of rags.  He’d sort of seen it all (he’d apparently seen the inside of plenty of liquor bars too, but that’s another story).  Though I learned a great deal from the class, I also learned that I didn’t want to be a reporter.  The pay sucks and everyone hates you - who needs that?

As journalists, the hours suck and the pay isn’t great. But at least everyone hates you. Bonus: You get banned from restaurants.

What’s the old joke about being a reporter? The pay stinks, the hours are awful but at least everyone hates you.
