“It pays to advertise” (advertising adage)

"It pays to advertise” is a saying that appeared in many 19th century newspapers, often ending “in/with the (newspaper name).” The slogan was developed because many businesses at the time thought that advertising was a waste of money. “It pays to advertise” has been cited in print since at least 1861.

The play It Pays to Advertise (1914), by Roi Cooper Megrue and Walter Hackett, was made into a movie in 1919 and again in 1931, further popularizing the saying.

When business is dull and things move slowly, it is just the time to advertise. A good many merchants and dealers feel poor about these days, and think they cannot afford the expense, and yet a very little reflection should satisfy them that they cannot in these times afford to quit advertising.

It pays to advertise any time—so those say who have done the most of it, and they ought to know—but the percentage is smaller when trade is brisk and money plenty, then when times are dull and there is little doing.

“Does it pay to advertise? Our experience teaches us that it does. A week ago we advertised for a boy to learn the printers’ trade. Imagine our surprise on Monday morning, on finding at our domicile an applicant, weighing just eight pounds and a half! We would not guarantee to all, such returns by patronizing the printer, but this is one instance where it was a success.”

Such idea that advertising is a waste of money is the most pathetic way of thinking “stop risking money for business.” What is business without money revolving in it? Advertisement has become part of making a business a success. “It pays to advertise” is a way of saying advertising is worth every penny. It is important nowadays to become competent in every way. "It really pays to advertise.” This is the most effective slogan I’ve ever known. Great job to the newspaper owners who devised a new strategy in promoting a business. Truly, advertisement nowadays really helps in the success of every business. Advertisements reach wider audience. The money you pay for the advertisement makes a great job making your profits doubled.

In business, advertising serves as blood stream wherein the number of customers are dependent on how a certain company introduce their products with the use of advertisement. Thus, advertising is indeed a worldwide trend on business, it;s either big or small businesses.
